As much fun as it is for the whole family to pile into the car or hop on a plane for a vacation, sometimes you may want one-on-one travel time. Maybe you're celebrating the end of a successful school year, or marking entry into the teen years. Or perhaps there's no reason at all -- you'd just like to explore a new destination and experience some fun activities with your son or daughter, no other family members allowed!
Here are some suggestions for some super-special mother-daughter or mother-son getaways to consider.
Giddy up: For your equestrian enthusiast, a dude ranch vacation is an awesome getaway. Between feeding the livestock, going on trail rides and meeting the
wranglers, your child will be in horse heaven! But what’s neat about dude ranches is that even if your son or daughter isn’t fanatical about horses, such a trip typically offers offer so many fabulous activities outdoors, like archery, fishing and hiking. At Elk Mountain Ranch, in Buena Vista, Colorado, the week’s activities include whitewater rafting, square dancing and a field trip to local hot springs. If you can’t commit to a week, consider a guest ranch, where shorter stays are welcome and activities are typically offered a la carte; at Wildcatter Ranch in Graham, Texas, suite accommodations are plush, and activities run the gamut from archery to canoeing to clay shooting. Plus, hearty, home-cooked ranch food can’t be beat!
Urban adventure: Skyscrapers, subways and street vendors, oh my! For suburban kids, a trip to the big city can be eye-opening and awe inspiring. My top pick for an
urban trip is Chicago. With its lakeside recreation trail, zoos, museums, American Girl Place and nearby Lego Discovery Centre, there’s so much to do, no matter what your child’s age or interest. As a kid growing up in New England, I have fond memories of visiting Boston, with its incredible historic sites, like the USS Constitution and Freedom Trail, as well as the New England Aquarium and Museum of Science. San Francisco’s Alcatraz is a nifty attraction for school-age children, and the cable cars are especially fun for preschoolers to ride (though grown-ups sure like this landmark mode of transportation, too).
Splish, splash: It’s no wonder moms love indoor waterpark resorts: kids can play in fun water features all day long, no sunscreen required! Most have areas for littlest
guests – with zero-entry pools and small slides – as well as more adrenaline-charged activities, like raft rides and steep chutes for teens. I recommend the Great Wolf Lodge in locations throughout the country because there is so much to do under one roof; when it’s time to take a break from being wet, kids can hang out in the arcade, play a MagiQuest virtual scavenger hunt or listen to pajama storytime in the lobby. Your little diva will adore the ice cream–themed Scooops Kid Spa, with services designed for ages 4 to 12.
Hit the beach: For single parents, all-inclusive oceanfront resorts make excellent one-on-one vacations since so many activities and loads of entertainment are included
or at your fingertips. It’s so easy for kids to make friends with other young vacationers at the kids’ clubs or during poolside games organized by friendly staff. I’m partial to the resorts along Mexico’s lovely Riviera Maya, because of the area’s awesome sightseeing options: snorkeling in underground rivers, visiting ancient Maya ruins or ziplining through the jungle. Excursions like this, which can be arranged by outfitters stationed in your resort’s lobby, are marvelous ways to make long-lasting vacation memories with your child!
