Please tell us more about the business and when you started it.

KidCards, Ltd. was founded in April 2008 as a means to overcoming the time-crunch obstacle that comes along with making homemade greeting cards. KidCards® Greeting Card books evolved from making homemade cards with my girls. In today's world of electronic gizmos and gadgets, the special art of card-making still conveys personal messages in a way nothing else can. But, busy schedules and time constraints can put card-making on the back burner, especially when the budding artist has limited reading and writing skills. So, I developed a way to streamline the process, while still leaving room for kids to be creative. KidCards® Greeting Card Books are sets of greeting cards that are spiral bound in a book format. Each page inside pulls out and folds to create an individual greeting card. Volumes 1 and 2, released in 2008, each consist of 20 cards offering a variety of cards within a single book; samples include birthday, thank you, get well, congratulations and general friendship cards. Each book also comes with a set of envelopes. KidCards, Ltd. has also released a Special Edition Christmas Book as well as a Volume 3 that consists of Teachers' Editions that are useful in a group setting. Each book sells for $14.99 and can be purchased at specialty toy & gift stores nationwide or online at www.kidcards.org.

Melissa MarraHow do you define Hybrid?

To me, hybrid means the successful combination of 2 completely different things. A Hybrid mom is someone that has the ability to triumphantly balance her drive as a professional, without compromising her responsibilities and role as a mother.

Tell us how your "What’s Next" moment occurred and what did it mean to you.

I have consistently had "What’s Now" moments since having my girls. Family has always been the number one priority in my life and having my own made it even more of a focus. After leaving my job of eight years to be a stay-at-home mom, I never planned to start my own business. At least not the way it happened. My girls and I love to do crafts and often make cards for family and friends who are celebrating an occasion or might be under the weather. It always seemed like the card-making was more my project than theirs; neither could read or write, yet, and the blank paper was often overwhelming. So, I started cutting out pictures from coloring books and pasting them on construction paper for them to color. Then I'd write a greeting. And, then it came to me... a "book" of sorts that kids could color & decorate, but the greetings would already be done for them. It took about a year for me to get the first book developed. We released the first one in April of 2008 and now we're in stores nationwide.

What are your biggest challenges?

Setting boundaries between work-time and family-time and scheduling are my biggest challenges.

What are your aspirations?

I aspire to grow KidCards into a thriving company that will someday be run by my two daughters!

What are your interests?

family time, travel, movies, crafts

What inspires you?

My family and my girls... when they look at me and say they love something I've drawn or done with KidCards, it makes me want to do even more. People who start with nothing more than their ideas and abilities and turn them into a thriving business also inspire me.
