Life As Greta: Chapter 7 | Who's Behind the Plants?

Written By: Bethany Hiitola

Life As Greta: Chapter 7 | Who's Behind the Plants?Meet Greta. A 30-something single-mom living in Chicago proper, ghostwriting for a man she has never met.  She’s miraculously completed the monthly manuscript deadline and received a new laptop, a crisp $1 bill, and a note saying he’s ready for a public appearance—only Greta has to go on a hunt around the world to find him!  Clue #1 was easy—a note from Clamming on the Omni Hotel letterhead.  And with a quick phone call to an old co-worker, the concierge, we find out Clamming checked in.  And when we arrive, Jen and Nicole know each other. What other surprises are in store?

Life As Greta: Chapter 7 | Who's Behind the Plants?

It took a whole 7 minutes and 12 seconds for the shrieking to die down and then, of course, for me to get the whole story.  Jen and Nicole where sorority sisters.  Same pledge class. Same Communication major.  Same lives—only Jen turned to publicity and Nicole to editing. And now the life of a concierge.  And now, we were back to discussing Clamming.

“How much did you tell her?”  Jen winked at Nicole in a You’re In For Such A Story sorta way.

I was a bit perplexed, “How much should I tell her?  What about the Non-Disclosure Agreement? “

Nicole laughed when Jen rolled her eyes.  It was one of those, laughs that you know it was meant to be at you, not with you.  And I wondered why I suddenly became the laughing stock of the group.

“Tell her it all,” Jen touched my arm and gave me a smile this time, “She’s an old friend.  He’s planning on coming out of the closet anyway.”

Owen pulled at my arm, “What hon?”

“Where’s Mitchell?”

“Still at his father’s,” Jen said in a not so nice way, “he decided a day with his son was better than with The Girlfriend.”  She continued on catching up Jen on the child-rearing updates and I kneeled down to a now almost tearful Owen.

“We’ll go find him later tonight, okay?  The slumber party is still in order.”  Seemingly accepting this Owen nodded and sat down at my feet to play with the crayons and coloring book.  Only when he sat down I heard a rustling at the plant stand beside us.  “What the hell—“

“It’s Arnold,” Nicole grunted, “The bellhop. He likes to follow me around.  Just ignore him.”

“Are you sure, because Clamming—“

And then the plants rustled again.  Only this time the potted plants fell over.  Unfortunately right on top of Owen and me who now was more than fed up with our adventure.  And I was about ready to agree with him until I saw…

Now it’s your turn what did Greta see?
