A life in the day

I gained a greater appreciation this week for all you who work from home and juggle personal and professional responsibilities. Due to a sick son and a traveling Hybrid Mom, I did the telecommuting thing for a couple of days (thanks to a flexible employer and some tasks that allowed me to work remotely). I was able to get things done and be there for my son, who is now recovering. For that matter, so am I.

I learned that it’s not as easy as it looks, there can be just as many distractions as in the office, and I would be at least 50 pounds heavier if I did this on a regular basis.

Here is a partial timeline of my work-at-home day:

8:30 Logged on to my computer.

8:32 Made coffee.

8:45 Realized I was not dressed appropriately for work. Added baseball cap to sweatpants/T-shirt combo.

9:33 Phone call from daughters’ classmate’s mother to see if we could come to a birthday party. We hadn’t yet RSVP’d. Spent 3 minutes on the phone making small talk. Didn’t she realize I was at work?

9:36 Placed home phone on kitchen table next to laptop. I really don’t want to have to stand up again to get the phone.

9:57 More coffee. I tried to make some conversation with co-workers around the coffee machine. Then realized I was speaking to myself.

10:02 Conversation around the coffee machine ended. I have to get back to work.

10:28 Checked on my son. Got him some breakfast. It was good to speak to someone.

10:45 Break.

11:00 Back from break.

12:20 Lunch. I walked from my office to the fridge. Fortunately it was a nice day, since I didn’t bring a jacket to work. Not much of a selection in the fridge. This office is not very well-stocked.

12:29 Ate at my desk again. Not healthy.

12:33 Lunch is over. Back to the grind.

1:06 Checked on my son. Got him some lunch. It was good to speak to someone.

2:15 Took a walk outside to get the mail.

2:20 Back from outside.

2:22 Break.

2:37 Back from break.

4:00 Time to pick up the girls from the bus stop.

4:06-4:18 Got the girls a snack and helped them with their homework.

4:35 Checked on my son. Got him a snack. It was good to speak to someone older than 4.

5:19 Logged off my computer. Phew, what a day.
