Please understand that I am not a mom who spends lavishly on my
children. Most of our clothes come from garage sales or thrift stores.
Nor am I a suburban social climber. I don’t even drive a Suburban. I
have a 1997 Subaru station wagon with 170,000 miles and a slightly
smashed bumper.

Positive, happy parents, is it even possible? That is the thought in my mind this week. Can you be a parent and happy? I ask the question because if you look around you, how many parents can you see that really look like the happy families we see in magazines? The reality appears more like washed-out, exhausted looking mum throwing not-so-happy looks at her children. This got me thinking, why is that? How and why are we blocking being happy with our children? What gets in the way of happy parenting?

In fact, at one time, I most assuredly would have been eligible to open my own chapter of the chronic late club.

These forums may encourage impulsive and risk-taking behavior. The July 2008 issue of the Harvard Mental Health Letter describes several risky electronic arenas and offers tips to help keep kids safe.

It's not new that over the years mothers have become increasingly wary
of marketing attempts targeted at their children, especially in schools
where sugary snacks and drinks have taken the forefront in
commercializing schools.

Soccer moms are a thing of the past according to a recent
article about marketing to modern moms [Brand Week]. Mothers today are giving themselves permission to etch
out their own identities and are refusing to play the endless game of over-scheduling
their children’s activities and losing themselves somewhere in the process.
