My Drastic Weight Loss | Print |  Email

losingweight52008.jpgWhen I became pregnant with my son, I also found out my father was dying of cancer.  Throughout my pregnancy, I assisted my mother in caring for my father during the week.  It was one of the hardest things I had to do in my entire life -- watching my loved one suffer horrible pain and agony and not being able to do anything about it.  I was holding it together for my family, but inside I was very scared and distraught. I found it hard to get excited about my pregnancy because there was so much suffering around me. I turned to food to console myself and gained over 70 pounds during my pregnancy.

My son was three-months-old when my father died, and after that I really took a hard look at my priorities. I wanted to be a good mom to my son and good wife to my husband, so I knew I needed to get my weight under control. I didn’t want to be the mom who was too tired to enjoy life.  I wanted to be active and healthy and a good role model. I decided to make a change and that was my first step.

The beginning of my weight loss was about baby steps. I started off small because I didn’t want to overwhelm myself and was in a lot of hip pain, so I decided to park at the far end of the parking lot and take my son upstairs to change him every time he needed a diaper change.  They were small changes, but a big improvement over my sedentary lifestyle. When that became a habit, I decided to go for walks with my son. Then I went for two walks a day, and then I started doing Taebo. I stuck with Taebo because it was exciting and fit into my son’s nap schedule. I also jogged with a jogging stroller.  Every time I got to a plateau, I would kick it up a notch and change my eating habits. It took me two years, but I’m now 104 lbs. lighter then I was when I had my son. I started at 253 pounds and am now at 149 pounds. When I got home from the hospital, I was a size 22 and now I am a size 8 and still losing.

My story has inspired a lot of people, especially women who are really overweight. Losing weight is very doable; it’s just about commitment. I tell moms all the time to start small and not overwhelm themselves because when you overwhelm yourself things seem impossible. Create habits that are manageable with your lifestyle and then challenge yourself to do some more. I also talk a lot about focusing on small numbers instead of large ones. Lose 5 or 10 pounds at a time instead of focusing on the 60 or 70 or 20 pounds you have to lose. Give yourself permission to not be perfect. If you have a bad weekend or bad day, get right back up on that horse and continue.

Losing weight is like a marathon, it’s not about winning, it’s about finishing. So when you fall, just get back up and keep going and don’t beat yourself up about it. Keep track of the food you eat and how much exercise you do. Record what you are doing and then go back to it for inspiration, accountability, and motivation. And finally, make some new friends that are into fitness and nurture those relationships. They will give you the support you need to keep going.
