You made the decision to stay home with your child until he started school. Well he’s been attending Kindergarten since September and you’ve yet to figure out how to work your way back into the workforce. But not full-time; you’re not ready for that yet. You still want to be there when he gets home, listen to him tell you about his day, why the teacher praised him, who broke the rules, who he shared his snack with.
Maybe your next step is consulting. Yeah, that’s sounds doable. You have an JD-MBA-MS-PhD and 15 years of work experience. Somebody needs your expertise – how do you find them? Here’s a few tips:
* Use your alumni network. Don’t be afraid to say, I’m looking for a part-time assignment. Ask them who is hiring contractors.
* Talk to your neighbors – who else do you know who is freelancing? Who are they working for?
* Check out the lecture series at your local college – see if they have a “back-to-work” series
* Check out the job board at Women at Work http://www.womenatworknetwork.com/
* Call your old boss and see if you can negotiate something. She knows how good you were – and still are
* Remind yourself you’re good. You’ve got skills and talents. You don’t need to apologize for the time away from the treadmill.
Don’t kid yourself that you can work while he’s underfoot. Carve out time and your own space for work. You need to have a home office/desk to call your own - not on the kitchen table or counter.
