Katie Sharp tells us how she considers herself a Hybrid Mom and how she has found that elusive 'balance' in her life! Thanks for sharing with us Katie! Keep up the great work, you are an inspiration!
How do you define Hybrid?
I define "hybrid mom" as a
woman who is determined to do all things that will enable her to reach
her goals. As a "hybrid mom" I have been able to provide a loving,
warm, supportive family atmosphere for my children without losing my
career and identity. This is so important for mothers who had careers
before children. It is part of our identity to be able to continue
working. However, it is certainly a challenge to balance "mommy life"
with your career. When you become a "hybrid" you can have the best of
both worlds!!
Tell us how your "What's Next" moment occurred and what did it mean to you ...
I always thought that it
would be okay to work full time once I had my children. After all my
mother did it and I turned out "fine". Once I had my first baby,
Hannah, the guilt set in. From the day I had to return to work full
time I began to dream and plan a way to work and be with my children.
For me, the best balance that I have found over the years is to work
part-time and be a mommy full-time. I have been able to accomplish this
by working many varied schedules. Some have included working every
weekend for years. Others have included working 2 days per week. It
took me 5 years to finally get over the fear and start working
part-time. Once I made the change I never looked back. It has been
great for my family and I don't ever want to change it!
What are your biggest challenges?
Remembering all the things
that need to get done. If it isn't on my schedule, it doesn't happen. I
recently missed an "Easter Hat Parade" for my daughter because I simply
forgot!! I felt terrible.
What are your aspirations?
To be the best parent and nurse that I can be.
What are your interests?
I am very compassionate
about my work, which is pediatric nursing. I am also very interested in
anything to do with my girls, Hannah and Allison.
What inspires you?
Women who make history by
challenging the ordinary. One of which is my mother. She is a Certified
Nurse Midwife and has faced many challenges in this role and she
continues to advocate for women's health issues. I have looked to her
all of my life for inspiration.
Feel free to tell us anything else you'd like...
I was so excited when I
read the first copy of Hybrid Mom. Everything in it was informative and
helpful to me. I often feel caught between the full time stay at home
moms and the full time career moms. This magazine has it all for those
of us who break the mold!
Thanks, Katie!
