TAKE TIME TO LAUGH YOUR A#% OFF
BY JENNIFER RAWLINGS
This past weekend I performed with two brilliant comedian friends of mine ,Wendy Liebman and Amy Anderson, at a performing Arts Theatre in Kansas. The three of us put together a stand-up show called “The Mom Squad…… airing out their dirty laundry”
The shows were a ton of fun and at the end of the performance the three of us gathered together on stage with the house lights up to do a “Q and A” with the audience.
A mother of five, named Starla, raised her hand and said “ This evening has been so wonderful for me to laugh and have fun. No one ever asks about me and what I want, it’s always about the kids and their needs. So tonight was special for me.”
This statement seemed to resonate with the entire audience- young mom, grandma, male , female, single , married. The whole audience seemed to be thrilled to spend an hour and half of their lives focusing on “adult fun” instead of their kids. In fact there was not a sullen teenager, crying baby, or terrorist toddler in sight.
The weekend got me thinking about how critical it is for moms to take time to enjoy their lives away from home and remembering to laugh and have fun…..without the kids. When was the last time you watched a movie and laughed so hard you cried? When is the last time you scheduled a play date for yourself?
Making fun time for yourself does not have to be expensive and can even be free. Invite some friends over for a board game or cards, host Bunco, go bowling, or picnic in the park, have an adults only movie night at your house and watch movies like “ Spinal Tap”, “Best in Show” “The Hangover”, “Blazing Saddles” “ There’s Something About Mary” or any of the old “airplane” movies. Go to a comedy club, or funny play, sing karaoke with a group.
It is a scientific fact that laughter helps reduce stress and BURNS CALORIES!!! Laughter also increases happiness and intimacy and strengthens your immune system.
Lets face it kids and families are stressful. So schedule yourself a much needed laugh break. The kids will still be there with their endless list of “ wants” but you will be refreshed and a better mom for taking the time for a good laugh.

I would have loved to see that show! When I laugh my a#$ off, I can actually feel myself healing… it’s like zapping all the stress particles in my body. The last time I remember laughing that hard was when I watched the Hangover on New Years Eve. I was in bed before midnight, but I woke up in the best mood.
